Summer Reading – How It Works

Can’t make it to a Kick-Off Party? Don’t worry, you can register online anytime. Need help accessing your Great Reading Adventure account? Stop by the library and a Super Librarian will be happy to assist you. Reading hours and activities can be logged June 1-August 31.

Prizes for Reading

Infants & Toddlers ages birth-4 years

For every 500 points you earn this summer by reading with your child, completing fun activities, and attending library programs, you will earn free books and prizes. Pick up your activity log beginning June 1, complete your activities, and log them on Great Reading Adventure.

Level 1 (500 points): Book of your choice

Level 2 (1,000 points): Prize of your choice

Level 3 (1,500 points): Book or prize of your choice

Level 4 (2,000 points): Pass to Li’l Builders End of the Summer Party, August 16

Level 5 (2,500+): Enter drawings for Duplo set or tabletop puppet theater

The more you read, the more books you can choose for your at-home library. You’ll earn a free book or prize for every 500 points you earn by reading (or listening to!) books, attending fun library programs or volunteering in the community. Every minute read equals 1 point, attend a library program for 10 points, or volunteer in the community for 25 points!

Level 1 (500 points): Book of your choice

Level 2 (1,000 points): Pass to the North Idaho Fair and a prize

Level 3 (1,500 points): Book & a food coupon

Level 4 (2,000 points): Pass to Skate Plaza Summer Reading Celebration, August 15

Level 5 (2,500+ points): Enter drawings for a family pass to the North Idaho Fair, Hayden Discount Cinema movie passes, and Triple Play gift cards.

Register and track your reading all summer to win cool prizes. Earn points for every book you read (or listen to!), library program you attend or community activity you complete. Every minute equals 1 point, attend a library program for 25 points, or volunteer in the community for 30 points.

Level 1 (500 points): Book of your choice

Level 2 (1,000 points): Prize of your choice (ear buds, food coupons, and more!)

Level 3 (1,500 points): King-size candy bar

Level 4 (2,000 points): Pass to Laser Tag Summer Reading Celebration at Strike Zone, August 16 & 23

Level 5 (2,500+ points): Enter drawings for a 4 pack pass to North Idaho Fair (rides and food included), Triple Play pass, Hayden Discount Theater Movie pass, and Gooey gift certificate.

‘Build a Better Dog House’ Show with Songwriter Eric Ode
Benjamin D. Dog (puppet) wants to build a new dog house—the world’s most amazing dog house!
With the help of the Tele-Traveling-Transportamatic (or is it really just a cardboard box?), Benjamin zips across the globe in search of inspiration. He visits pyramids and palaces, castles and cathedrals in this music-filled, high-participation concert from children’s author and award-winning songwriter Eric Ode.

Solar Eclipse Party at the Hayden and Pinehurst Libraries
Monday, August 21, 10:15 am - 11:30 am

A solar eclipse is a special occasion! Here in North Idaho, the sun will be 92% obscured.

Celebrate the All-American Solar Eclipse in style at the library with crafts (including a solar eclipse viewer as it is dangerous to look directly at an eclipse), activities, and a sun-sational snack! The Solar Eclipse Party will go from 10:15 am until 11:30 am. The eclipse will begin around 9:13 am and will end around 11:47. Eclipse maximum will be around 10:27 am. (Geared to ages 4-12).


Programs start Monday, June 12 and run weekly through Friday, August 11 unless otherwise noted.

Parents and their toddlers will have a blast gardening, going on science scavenger hunts, studying bugs, doing outdoor yoga, and hearing books, of course! Come dressed to get muddy! Dig it? Geared to ages 2-4 years. No program July 4.

Thursdays in July - Sensory Storytime

July 6, 13, 20, and 27, 10:30 am - A story time geared to children on the autism spectrum or with other special needs. Explore books, songs, and movement in a structured, fun environment.

Registration preferred—a picture schedule of the upcoming story time will be emailed so you and your child can discuss and plan in advance. Geared to ages 3-6.

July 6, 13, 20, 27, 2 pm - Build a healthier you at the library with our weekly sessions.

Solar Eclipse Party at the Hayden and Pinehurst Libraries

A solar eclipse is a special occasion! Here in North Idaho, the sun will be 92% obscured.

Celebrate the All-American Solar Eclipse in style at the library with crafts (including a solar eclipse viewer as it is dangerous to look directly at an eclipse), activities, and a sun-sational snack! The Solar Eclipse Party will go from 10:15 am until 11:30 am. The eclipse will begin around 9:13 am and will end around 11:47. Eclipse maximum will be around 10:27 am. (Geared to ages 4-12).


Programs run weekly starting June 13, and end Thursday, August 10.
