About North Idaho Reads
Mission Statement: Through the magic of words, North Idaho Reads will engage our communities and foster an understanding of the common threads that unite us.
North Idaho Reads is a joint reading project of the Community Library Network, Coeur d’Alene Public Library, and the Wallace Railroad Depot Museum designed to encourage regional residents to read the Gregg Olsen’s book, The Deep Dark.
For 2019 North Idaho Reads is supported, in part, by a grant from the Idaho Humanities Council, a state-based program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional support is provided by Library Friends groups and community sponsors.
Gregg Olsen, The Deep Dark
On May 2, 1972, as a result of the Silver Valley Sunshine Mine disaster, 91 miners died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
"The Deep Dark" is the story of the miners, their families and the community's response to the disaster. One positive outcome of the disaster was safety changes to the mining industry. This book encourages a closer look at the community and family bonds, the history of mining in Idaho, and the cultural bonds that brought the community together and sometimes frayed it to the breaking point.
Join us to hear about how this true event inspired Gregg’s writing and what motivated him to look behind the scenes.
